"Nirvana. 20 Years" in Malaga (La Termica)

La Termica & Contemporanea present 'Nirvana. 20 Years' show to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death from April 10th to July 25th at La Termica. A tribute to Nirvana that has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important rock bands of the modern era. “Nirvana. 20 Years” show will open on April 10th at La Termica, Malaga (Spain). The exhibition has been curated by Maurizio Guidoni, Vittoria Mainoldi and Beatrice Piantanida from ONO. 20 years after Cobain’s (April 5th 1994), La Termica looks back on this band and on Seattle’s music scene, grunge. «It’s the most exciting scene produced by a single city, something that did not happened since the days of the London’s Punk». This says Everett True, the journalist who coined the term grunge. Seattle was the place. The city where records label Sub Pop promoted bands such as Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Nirvana. Grunge was a nihilistic movement which takes place in a deep economic crisis in the 80’s in an America, harrased by heroin and AIDS. A new sound to response the new demands from young people with no references was born in this America. Young people looked at English Punk Rock searching for new artistic expressions.Nirvana was formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in 1987, releasing his first album ‘Bleach’ in 1989. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. Despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important rock bands of the modern era. Kurt Cobain inaugurated an era and style with torn jeans, heavy flannel shirts and long hair. An anti-fashion or Do It Yourself example. The first anti-globalization movements took place in this period in response to the power of the corporations such as Starbucks or Microsoft, born in Seattle. The images of Charles Peterson, Kevin Mazur and Kirk Weddle, included in the exhibition, illustrate this fervent and creative period that will influence the music and style to this day. This images reveal this creative and subversive world free from industry requirements. The photographs of the exhibition wants go over the history of one of the most influential bands in the 90s, and even now. Charles Peterson’s images shape the core of the exhibition and focus on Nirvana since its early years in the late 80’s to Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. Peterson has also helped to document the Seattle grunge scene shooting other groups such as Pearl Jam, Mudhoney and Soundgarden, among others. Kevin Mazur’s works documented Kurt Cobain and his family’s privacy: his wife, singer Courtney Love and his daughter Frances Bean. Finally, there are Kirk Weddle’s photographs from the backstage of the “Nevermind” album cover shooting on October 28, 1991. “Nirvana. 20 Years” also includes documentary “Kurt Cobain About A Son”, a film by A.J. Schnak, narrated by Kurt Cobain, and with a soundtrack made by Steven Fisk y Benjamin Gibbard. An special conference will take place at La Termica on April 10 with Charles Peterson who will talk about this golden period in Seattle. And many thanks to Salomon Castiel, Yolanda Guardamuro, Martin Moniche, Antonio Rodríguez, Miguel Gomez, Virginia Quero and all La Termica staff.
