"Steve Schapiro. Retrospective" in Zaragoza (Centro de Historias)
 

Centro de Historias de Zaragoza & Contemporanea present 'Steve Schapiro. Retrospective' from June 4 to August 23, the first retrospective exhibition in Spain of American photographer Steve Schapiro (New York, 1934). Curated by Mario Martin Pareja and produced by Contemporanea, the show is also included in the PhotoEspaña 2015 official program. The exhibition reviews Steve Schapiro's extraordinary 50-years career as a photographer. His photographs document the myth and the American society from Kennedy to nowadays and they immortalized important historical facts, contemporary rock stars, celebrities and common people. Schapiro was a William Eugene Smith's pupil and he started his career as a documentary photographer capturing most of the political and social earthquakes of our times. He worked as an 'special photographer' for the cinema studios later, shooting some cult movies of the New Hollywood period such as "Taxi Driver", "The Godfather" or "Midnight Cowboy", among others. Schapiro is one of the most influent living photographers nowadays. His work has been shown in books, well-known magazines (Life, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Time, Paris Match...) and in Museums worldwide. The first part of the exhibition is full of celebrities who Schapiro have shot during his career. These images capture celebs from music, cinema, sport and culture scenes in private or ludic moments: Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroiani, Jodie Foster, Samuel Beckett, René Magritte, Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote, Magritte, Ray Charles, David Bowie... The second section of the exhibition represents the Schapiro's photojournalist work dedicated to common people. It's a genuine street photography made from the end of the 50's when he produced photo-essays on subjects as varied as Easter in Harlem, the Apollo Theater, Haight-Ashbury, political protest, the president campaign of Robert Kennedy, the Martin Luther King's assassination, a particularly poignant story about the lives of migrant workers in Arkansas… In fact, he portraited a real and unretoched America: the Civil Rights Movement, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Selma to Montgomery March, etc. Another section of the exhibition is dedicated to the Schapiro's best works in cinema: 'Taxi Driver' (1976) and 'The Godfather' (1971). This part includes iconic shots with Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro as main characters. The last part of the show includes the images of two celebrities from Pop culture: Andy Warhol, along with other protagonists of The Factory, including his muse Edie Sedwich, and The Velvet Underground & Nico. The exhibition also includes some videos and documentary "Steve Schapiro and the American Icons" (Wichita Films, 2013) about the life and works of Steve Shapiro. Centro de Historias de Zaragoza y Contemporánea presentan por primera vez en España la exposición “Steve Schapiro. Retrospectiva” que abrirá sus puertas desde el 4 de junio hasta el 23 de agosto de 2015. Comisariada por Mario Martín Pareja, se presenta por vez primera en nuestro país la retrospectiva del fotógrafo norteamericano Steve Schapiro. Esta muestra se enmarca dentro de la programación oficial de PhotoEspaña 2015 y ha sido producida por Contemporánea. Esta exposición recorre la extraordinaria carrera de Steve Schapiro (Nueva York, 1934) a lo largo de 50 años. Sus fotografías documentan el mito y la sociedad estadounidenses desde Kennedy hasta hoy consiguiendo inmortalizar a las estrellas más importantes del rock y a las celebridades de nuestro tiempo, los acontecimientos históricos más importantes, así como a la gente común.  Este alumno de William Eugene Smith comienza su carrera como fotógrafo documental logrando capturar muchos de los grandes terremotos políticos y sociales de nuestro tiempo. Más tarde, trabaja como 'special photographer' para los estudios cinematográficos, realizando numerosos reportajes de películas de culto de la Nueva Hollywood, entre ellos, "Taxi Driver", "El Padrino", "Chinatown" o "Cowboy de medianoche".  Schapiro es uno de los fotógrafos vivos más influyentes de nuestro tiempo y su obra ha sido mostrada en numerosas publicaciones monográficas, en las revistas más importantes (Life, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Time, Paris Match...) y exhibida en todo el mundo. La primera parte de la exposición es la más nutrida por estar dedicada a algunas de las celebridades que ha retratado en toda su carrera. Estas imágenes capturan los protagonistas del mundo de la música, el cine, el deporte y la cultura en el sentido más amplio durante momentos íntimos o lúdicos: Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroiani, Jodie Foster, Samuel Beckett, René Magritte, Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote, Magritte, Ray Charles, David Bowie... La segunda sección constituye el trabajo fotoperiodístico que Schapiro ha dedicado a la gente común, verdaderos foto-ensayos que realiza desde finales de los años 50 y que retratan una América real y sin retoques: Semana Santa en Harlem, Teatro Apollo, Haight-Ashbury, el movimiento por los derechos civiles, la Marcha sobre Washington, las duras vidas de los trabajadores inmigrantes  en Arkansas, la campaña electoral de Robert Kennedy, el asesinato de Martin Luther King Jr. Otra parte de la exposición está dedicada a dos de los mejores trabajos de Schapiro en el cine: "Taxi Driver" (1976) y El Padrino" (1971). Esta sección incluye famosísimas imágenes de actores como Marlon Brando y Robert De Niro, tanto en escenas de las películas como en los camerinos. Imágenes, en definitiva, icónicas en el imaginario colectivo. Finalmente, la cuarta y última parte está dedicada a las imágenes que retratan a dos celebridades de la cultura Pop universal. Del arte, por un lado, como es Andy Warhol, junto con diversos protagonistas de The Factory, incluyendo a su musa Edie Sedwich; y, por otro, de la música, como es la Velvet Underground, de la que fue manager el propio Warhol, con la cantante Nico. Complementa la exposición diversos documentales sobre la vida y obra de Steve Schapiro, incluído "Steve Schapiro y los iconos americanos" (Wichita Films, 2013). Esta exposición se ha realizado en colaboración con Camera Work Gallery, Berlín.
